Vermiculite vs. Perlite

 

 

Application temperature of vermiculite is higher than that of perlite.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite has a high ion exchange capacity. Perlite does not have this feature.

 

 

 

 

 

Exfoliated vermiculite has much less abrasive (does not cause damage to the roots) features in comparison with perlite.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite has less dust formation properties as compared to the perlite.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite is able to hold the positive ions fertilizers. Perlite isn’t able to hold the positive ions fertilizers and doesn’t participate in the ion exchange processes.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite gradually gives nutrients to plants. Perlite is nutritionally neutral, and not even able to temporarily hold these substances.

 

 

 

 

 

Strength of vermiculite grains is higher than that of perlite. Perlite granules are fragile.

 

 

 

 

 

The water holding capacity of vermiculite is higher than that of perlite. Perlite poorly retains moisture.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite does not form voids in backfilling. Perlite does.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite is more durable than perlite.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite can be used iteratively, unlike perlite.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite has less shrinkage during grinding (less caking).

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite has a smaller angle of repose (27-30 deg.).

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite is less hygroscopic.

 

 

 

 

 

Vermiculite's mineral elements are in assimilable forms for plants. In perlite they are in unassimilable forms.
